I have just completed six illustrated postcards for Indian Summer House: a wonderful hotel in Kerala, India, where I had the pleasure of visiting in January.
This winter, my mother and I fell totally in love with Indian Summer House in Muvattupuzha during our tour of Kerala. After just one night in another hotel, following a glorious three night stay there, we swiftly returned to the serene lake-side jungle setting for just one more night in paradise! There is something truly special about the hotel; the peacefulness, even though the buzz of Indian life still surrounds the perimeter. The way the columned hallways cast a pattern of shade and light, and the sunlight glittered over the pool while butterflies dance over the surface of the water.
After spotting a colourful sketch I had made of the swimming pool, Don, the owner, asked me to illustrate six different views from in and around the property. The originals would be framed within the hotel, and scans would be made into postcards.
Safe to say, inspiration came naturally. After a serene few days of sketching, photographing and enjoying my surroundings, I returned to England to work on finishing the illustrations in my studio. The final pieces have been scanned and edited so that they can be printed easily onto postcards, and Don will collect the originals to take home and frame, when he’s in London this July.
